24-Hour Health Services and New Labs Reduce Inter-Island Travel for Patients
World ·
The introduction of 24-hour medical services and new laboratory facilities at the Shaviyani Maroshi health centre has eliminated the need for residents to undertake costly and time-consuming journeys for basic medical tests.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali emphasized that these upgrades mark a transformative shift in the delivery of primary healthcare. Previously, residents were forced to travel to neighboring islands for routine blood tests and diagnostic services, a process that imposed financial burdens and created significant logistical challenges when transporting critically ill patients.
Minister Geela noted that providing laboratory services directly on the islands allows for faster diagnoses and the immediate commencement of treatment. This localized approach reduces the risks associated with patient transport and ensures that medical intervention is not delayed by geography.
Beyond diagnostics, the transition to round-the-clock operations ensures that emergency care is available regardless of the hour. "Illnesses and emergencies do not occur at a particular time," Minister Geela stated, noting that having healthcare workers available in the middle of the night can be the difference between life and death. The Minister highlighted that children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses would benefit most from this increased accessibility.
The expansion is part of a broader national strategy to decentralize healthcare. Establishing laboratory services on every inhabited island is a key pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The government is currently accelerating efforts to bring these diagnostic capabilities to 76 islands that currently lack them.
In tandem with the rollout of laboratory equipment, the administration is extending the operating hours of numerous health centres across the archipelago and undertaking extensive facility expansions to accommodate the increased demand for 24-hour care.
