A major fire at the Funaadu petrol shed in Shaviyani Atoll this morning has left five houses damaged and displaced 33 people. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the blaze affected five houses in the vicinity, with one house completely gutted. The 33 displaced individuals have been provided with temporary shelter and food supplies. 20 people were taken to the Shaviyani Atoll Hospital due to smoke inhalation and minor injuries, but all have been discharged after receiving treatment. The fire, which broke out at the "Foumini" petrol shed, was brought under control by 12:00 PM with the joint efforts of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Funaadu Airport fire team, police, and local residents. Cooling operations continue to prevent re-ignition. The destruction of the only petrol shed on the island has caused severe disruptions to land transport and fuel supply for fishing vessels and local boats. The island council is taking urgent steps to address the fuel shortage.
