478 Maldivian Farmers Trained in Modern Agriculture and Value Addition
Politics ·
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has trained 478 farmers from 28 islands over the past two years, intensifying a nationwide drive to modernize the local farming sector.
The initiative provides farmers with scientific knowledge and hands-on technical experience, focusing on sustainability and profitability. Ministry officials have been conducting programs across the country to adapt advanced farming methods to the unique Maldivian island environment. Key training includes cutting-edge techniques like hydroponics and greenhouse farming, which help maximize yields and manage environmental challenges.
A major focus is now on post-harvest training, encouraging a strategic shift from selling raw produce to creating value-added goods. Farmers are learning to process their harvests into marketable products such as juices, jams, dried fruits, and vegetables.
This strategic pivot addresses two major financial constraints: it significantly extends the shelf life of agricultural goods and increases overall financial returns for the farming community, providing greater market stability. The program marks a significant step towards building a more resilient and profitable agricultural sector in the Maldives.
