91 Out of 93 Parliamentarians Submit Mandatory Annual Financial Disclosure Statements
World ·
The Maldivian Parliament has published the annual financial disclosures for 91 of its 93 members, marking a high compliance rate for the legislative body's transparency regulations.
Under current rules, members of the Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament) must file detailed statements of their assets, liabilities, and income sources. These documents, now available on the official Parliament website, cover the reporting period ending August 31. The measure is designed to curb corruption and ensure public accountability by making the financial interests of lawmakers a matter of public record.
While the majority of the sitting parliament adhered to the deadline, Machangolhi North MP Ibrahim Mohamed is the sole incumbent who has yet to submit his statement. This filing cycle represents the second mandatory disclosure for the current parliament.
The reporting period also captured the transitions of specific seats. Former lawmaker Mohamed Sinan, who vacated his seat for Hithadhoo North in April, submitted his second-year statement to fulfill his legal obligations for the period he served. Conversely, the newly elected Hithadhoo North MP, Abdulla Sodiq, remains exempt from this cycle, as he was sworn in on June 15 and has not yet reached the threshold for the annual filing requirement.
With a compliance rate of nearly 98 percent, the Parliament Secretariat's data suggests a strong adherence to financial transparency laws. The public disclosure of these statements allows citizens and oversight bodies to monitor potential conflicts of interest and ensure that the legislative branch operates with integrity.
