Aasandha Expands Overseas Coverage to Include Maldivians in the Philippines
Politics ·
The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has announced the expansion of the Meranaa scheme under Aasandha to include Maldivian citizens residing in the Philippines, effective January 1, 2026. The Meranaa scheme, which currently provides medical coverage for Maldivians living in Sri Lanka, India, and Malaysia, will now cover up to 65 percent of medical expenses incurred by Maldivians in the Philippines. This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to extend social protection to Maldivians abroad. The Philippines is a popular destination for Maldivian students pursuing higher education, particularly in aviation and medicine. The announcement was made during a ceremony where Gender Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham officially launched the newly restructured NSPA.
