Abdul Ghafoor Moosa Elected Interim Chairman of MDP with 65 Votes

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has appointed Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) as its interim chairman. The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s National Assembly, with 65 members voting in support of Gapo’s appointment. The position became vacant following the resignation of Fayyaz Ismail, who stepped down last month citing internal unrest and the need to give party leaders space to make decisions. Fayyaz had served as MDP Chairman since May 2022. The party had previously attempted to elect an interim chairman in November, but the process was marred by disputes and adjournments. Gapo’s appointment is seen as a stabilizing move as the party navigates internal divisions between factions aligned with former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed.
