Addu Business Dialogue Draws 500 Participants to Transform Southern Atoll into Commercial Hub

Politics ·
More than 500 participants have registered for the Addu Business Dialogue, a strategic development forum designed to transform Addu City and Addu Atoll into a major commercial center. The initiative, first announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, focuses on accelerating the growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the south. Speaking at the President’s Office, the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, detailed a roadmap to implement specialized incentives between 2027 and 2029. The forum, scheduled for May 13-14, serves as a critical discovery phase to identify the precise operational needs of the region. Minister Saeed emphasized that the government is seeking to determine the exact support required across key sectors, including tourism, agriculture, fisheries, retail, and SMEs. By gathering a diverse group of local entrepreneurs, academics, and technical specialists, the government aims to develop a data-driven approach to stimulate business growth in the atoll. Over the two-day event, officials will conduct an expansive and open review to define the specific government actions necessary for accelerated development. This process is intended to ensure that the resulting policies are grounded in the actual needs of the local business community. Following a review by the Cabinet, the government plans to formally establish a framework of regulatory and financial incentives. Minister Saeed described the Addu Business Dialogue as an exploratory pilot project. If successful, the government intends to replicate this consultative model in other regions across the Maldives to drive decentralized economic growth.
