Addu Business Dialogue Sets Stage for Targeted Economic Growth and National Unity

The Addu Business Dialogue opened with a strong call for national unity, with Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade Mohamed Saeed asserting that overcoming political division is essential for the Maldives' economic progress. Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day summit at Hithadhoo School in Addu City, Minister Saeed emphasized that the nation must speak with a unified voice to achieve sustainable growth. Organized by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Business Centre Corporation, the summit aims to identify the primary obstacles hindering the local economy and chart a developmental path for Addu City over the next three years. The initiative follows a directive from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to implement targeted economic incentives between 2027 and 2029. According to Minister Saeed, the administration intends to spark rapid growth by focusing on specific regions, with Addu City serving as the foundational starting point. The event brings together senior officials from the ministries of homeland security, labor, technology, tourism, civil aviation, fisheries, agriculture, and ocean resources. They are joined by representatives from banking institutions, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, and Maldives Ports Limited. Together, they are evaluating the current economic climate to propose sectors that would benefit most from tax relief, financial incentives, and new business frameworks. Minister Saeed described the dialogue as an "accelerated developmental endeavour," noting that the insights gathered regarding small and medium-sized enterprises will be used to draft a formal Cabinet policy paper. He urged local business owners and residents to articulate clear solutions to the hardships and obstacles they face daily, as their firsthand experience is critical to the city's progress. This regional focus is intended as a pilot for a broader national strategy aimed at achieving developed-nation status by 2040. The Minister underscored that success depends on a proactive collaboration between the Addu City Council, state institutions, and the private sector to resolve critical issues surrounding land acquisition, labor availability, and financing.
