Addu Link Bridge Moves Forward as Government Reviews Concept Design

The government has taken a major step in its ambitious plan to physically connect the islands of Hithadhoo, Meedhoo, and Hulhudhoo in Addu City. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that the concept design for the landmark bridge is now officially under review. Consultancy work, led by China's TY Lin International, has progressed through critical preliminary stages. Initial studies evaluated two primary options: a cable car system or a fixed bridge. After assessing route alignments and technical viability, the Ministry confirmed a bridge connection was selected as the most appropriate and feasible long-term solution for integrating the islands. The planning process meticulously examined three potential routes. Following this assessment, "Route 2" was identified as the most suitable alignment. This proposed route features four key bridge crossings. For each crossing, consultants have conducted design assessments, proposing three bridge types tailored to the specific depth and breadth of the channels: floating bridges, continuous rigid frame girder bridges, and cable-stayed bridges. The Ministry is concurrently developing effective designs for both the superstructure and substructure of the bridge. Accompanying environmental studies have been completed. The concept design for the Hithadhoo-Hulhumeedhoo Link Bridge has been prepared by the consultant and is now under official review. On-site work is imminent, with geo-technical investigations scheduled to be completed within the coming month. This progress establishes a clear timeline. The Ministry announced that all necessary feasibility documents, preliminary designs, and technical specifications required to launch the international tender phase are on track to be finalized by June of this year.
