Adhaalath Party Backs New Dress Code While MDP Condemns Restrictions on Women
Politics ·
The Adhaalath Party, a coalition partner in the opposition, has expressed support for the Civil Service Commission’s recently amended dress code for civil service employees. The amendments, gazetted last Tuesday, require stricter attire for both male and female staff, sparking public debate. Key changes include mandatory long- or short-sleeved shirts with ties for men, office shoes, and specific clothing length requirements for women, among other rules. The Adhaalath Party described the amendments as a positive step for societal religious and social security. However, the main opposition party, MDP, has strongly criticized the changes, accusing the government of interfering with women’s personal freedoms. Former President Mohamed Nasheed emphasized that the state should not regulate women’s personal choices under the guise of adornment.
