ADK Hospital Installs Real-Time Neuro Monitoring System for Safer Surgeries
Health ·
ADK Hospital in Malé has introduced a state-of-the-art neuro monitoring system that provides real-time information on the functioning of a patient's nervous system during surgical procedures. The system was officially inaugurated during a ceremony held on Monday night.
Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Mohamed Zaidan Adeel explained that during operations, patients are given anesthesia for pain relief, making it difficult to assess their condition. The new system, which connects to the patient's body via small pins, allows doctors to monitor internal physiological signals even when the patient is unable to communicate. This is particularly valuable during delicate brain surgeries, such as tumor removal, where the system can alert surgeons when they approach critical areas.
Dr. Zaidan noted that the technology reduces the risk of paralysis during surgery and helps protect the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. ADK Hospital first used neuro monitoring for two operations on July 16 and 17, 2023, and later removed a large tumor using the technique in May of the same year. The permanent system installed this month will allow the hospital to expand the service.
