Ahl al-Bayt: The exalted household of the Prophet Muhammad and the duty of love and respect

Opinion ·
The family of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the Ahl al-Bayt — are the pure, honourable and virtuous people chosen by Allah, and the love and respect owed to them are established by the Qur'an and the Sunnah, according to an article published on Raajje.mv. The article states that scholars of the Muslim community have consistently taught that following the way of the Ahl al-Bayt is among the duties of believers, and that the Qur'an itself attests to this. Citing the Qur'an, it notes that Allah describes the family of the Prophet as pure and holy: "Allah only desires to keep away impurity from you, O people of the household, and to purify you completely" (Al-Ahzab 33:33). According to the article, this verse is one of the clearest textual proofs of the honour, purity and exalted station of the Ahl al-Bayt, and was revealed concerning those who were present with the Prophet, including Fatimah, Ali, Hasan and Husayn, whose status is well established in the hadith literature. The article also highlights the event of Mubahala, in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) brought Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husayn and said to his opponents: "O Allah, if these are the truth, let them be." This event, it says, proves that they were his closest and most beloved in Allah's sight, and that their truth was undeniable. It further narrates that the Prophet said: "I leave among you the two weighty things: the Qur'an and my family (Ahl al-Bayt). Whoever holds to them will not go astray." The hadith is recorded in many collections and is a strong proof of their role as guides and teachers for the Muslim community, the article states, adding that their knowledge, justice and faith are well known and that believers love them not merely as relatives but because they carry the message and the way of the Prophet. A report is also cited in which Fatimah came to the Prophet, sat beside him and was kissed and warmly welcomed by him. He said to her, "O Fatimah, Allah is pleased with whoever pleases you, and displeased with whoever displeases you" — a very clear indication of her rank and the respect owed to her as one of the Ahl al-Bayt. According to the article, the family of the Prophet are a mercy to the believers, a source of guidance, and an example of patience, devotion and righteousness. They endured hardship for the sake of the truth, upheld justice in the most difficult circumstances and never abandoned what Allah commanded them, it says. Therefore, loving and respecting them is not an added duty but an expression of one's love for the Prophet himself, in line with the Qur'anic verse: "Say: I ask you no reward for it except love for [my] near kindred" (Ash-Shura 42:23). The article also quotes the narration from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on the virtues of the family of the Prophet: "I am from the family, and the family is from me; whoever loves me has loved the family, and whoever loves the family, Allah will love him." It notes that the Prophet himself honoured them, appointed them, and made it clear that whoever loved them would be united with him in Paradise, and that scholars have noted the Ahl al-Bayt are among the most righteous of creation after the Prophet, and that it is part of faith to acknowledge their virtues without going to extremes. The article adds that the attributes of Allah are greatness and patience, and that the family of the Prophet lived their lives upon these qualities. Finally, it states that the Ahl al-Bayt teach Muslims what it means to be steadfast in truth, loyal to Allah and humble before Him. Their love is not limited to the family alone, but is tied to obedience, justice and following the path of Allah, and whoever follows them with sincerity follows what was left by the Prophet: the Qur'an and his Sunnah.
