AI-powered eye screening service launched at iCare Hospital

Health ·
iCare Hospital, in collaboration with Iris, has officially inaugurated a service that screens the retina of the eye using artificial intelligence. The service was officially inaugurated on Thursday past at the Maldives Health and Family Expo 2026 held at Hulhumale Central Park. The service was officially inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Health Ahmed Hamdoon Nasser and iCare Managing Director Dr. Abdullah Zahir. With this service, AI is introduced to iCare’s screening services, which will greatly facilitate the early detection of signs of eye diseases and the quick identification of individuals requiring further analysis and treatment, according to information from the hospital. Under this service, during the screening process, photos of the retina at the back of the eye are taken using a special camera, and these photos are analyzed through Iris's 'SELENA+' AI system. With its help, problems facing the eyes due to diabetes, glaucoma, and issues affecting vision due to aging can be detected. With the assistance of the report prepared by this system, such problems facing the eyes can be detected within a very short time, ensuring that individuals who need further treatment obtain it without delay. Early detection of diseases is very important in maintaining eye health and safeguarding vision. Specifically, since some eye diseases strike without showing any symptoms as one ages, such screenings help pave the way for detecting the disease before there is a change in vision, according to information from iCare. This service, which includes AI technology and expert advice from doctors, will assist in making quick and accurate decisions regarding eye care. One of iCare’s objectives is to make the eye screening service as easy as possible and to raise awareness among many people about safeguarding eye vision. The hospital highlights that this service will soon begin to be available at iCare Hospital located on Orchid Magu in Malé. Visitors to the Maldives Health and Family Expo were also given the opportunity to experience the service at iCare’s stall.
