Air India has commemorated 50 years of service to the Maldives, marking the milestone with celebrations at Velana International Airport (VIA). The national airline of India first began operations to the Maldives on February 21, 1976, making it the first Indian airline to serve the island nation. To celebrate the anniversary, Air India organized special events, including a ceremonial welcome for passengers aboard its flight to the Maldives. The flight carried 139 passengers, who were greeted with traditional music, flowers, and refreshments. Air India has played a significant role in connecting India and the Maldives, facilitating tourism, trade, and cultural exchange over the past five decades.
