Saudi Arabian company Al-Rajhi will fully fund the construction of the Hulhumalé Grand Mosque, a landmark project designed to accommodate 10,000 worshippers, Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announced. The agreement was signed during the minister's visit to Medina, according to a media statement.
Dr Shaheem said the project aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's presidential address, with practical work set to commence on 13 September 2026. This date marks the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam, adding historical significance to the initiative.
The mosque will be built between Hulhumalé Phase Two and Phase Three, forming part of a comprehensive complex that includes surrounding grounds, a commercial building, parking facilities, and a Qur'an museum. The Islamic ministry has finalized the concept design, with detailed design work currently underway in collaboration with international experts.
Al-Rajhi's financing covers all design and construction costs, ensuring the project's completion without financial strain on the Maldivian government. The development is expected to meet the growing religious needs of Hulhumalé's expanding population.
A delegation from Al-Rajhi is anticipated to attend the groundbreaking ceremony when construction formally begins, underscoring the company's commitment to the project's success.
