Amendment Proposed to Make Service Charges in Dollars Mandatory Under Employment Act

Economy ·
A new amendment has been proposed to make it mandatory for service charges collected in dollars to be converted into Maldivian Rufiyaa before being distributed to employees. The amendment, introduced by MP Mauroof Zakir of the Kendhoo constituency, aims to ensure that service charges are fairly distributed among employees in the tourism industry. The proposed changes would require that service charges collected in dollars be converted into local currency and distributed to all employees, including those in non-service charge roles. The amendment also seeks to prevent employers from withholding service charges from employees and ensure that all staff receive their fair share. The proposed changes are part of an effort to provide greater financial security and transparency for workers in the tourism sector.
