The Office of the People’s Majlis has announced that applications are now open for the position of member of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission. The vacancy follows the resignation of Mohamed Farshath, who served as the Chairman of the Commission. According to a statement from the Majlis, the appointment is being made under Article 17(a)(1) of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act (Act No. 16/2025). Applicants must be Maldivian citizens aged at least 30 years, hold a first degree in journalism, broadcasting, policy-making, or management, or have a minimum of five years of experience in the media field. Individuals who are responsible persons or editors of a media outlet, have business ownership in the communication and media service sector, are members of a political party, hold a constitutionally or legally elected or appointed position, or have been convicted of specific crimes are ineligible. The Commission's members serve a five-year term, and no member may serve more than two terms. Applicants must submit the application form, resume, criminal and debt record forms, proof of Maldivian citizenship, and copies of qualifications by 12:00 noon on the 16th of this month to the Office of the People’s Majlis. Farshath, who submitted his resignation to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu last month, cited unsolvable challenges in ensuring equality and fairness for all media outlets. The Commission comprises seven members: three appointed by the Majlis and four elected by the media. The other Majlis-appointed members are Sofa Shafeeq and Amina Saraah Izzat. The media-elected members, who entered without an election due to only four applicants, are Abdulazeez Ibrahim, Zamaath Ahmed Waheed, Sima Naseema, and Hussain Saqif.
