Minister of Arts, Culture, and Heritage Heena Waleed has lauded the Maldivian workforce as the essential foundation of the nation's development, describing their contributions as "invaluable" to the country's growth.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with PSM News during the official Workers’ Day march, Minister Heena emphasized that every individual contributing to the Maldives' infrastructural, economic, and social sectors performs a critical service. She asserted that the government remains committed to prioritizing the welfare and well-being of all workers across the archipelago.
“Everyone who works is doing an important service to the country. An invaluable service,” the Minister stated, framing the workforce as the primary engine driving the nation forward. By referring to workers as the "backbone" of the Maldives, she highlighted the indispensable role they play in maintaining the country's daily operations and long-term stability.
According to the Minister, the primary objective of celebrating Workers’ Day is to provide a formal platform for the nation to express profound appreciation for the tireless efforts and sacrifices made by employees in all sectors.
Observed annually on May 1, Workers’ Day is a global event dedicated to honoring labor contributions while drawing attention to the systemic challenges workers face. The day serves as a critical reminder to advocate for improved workplace safety, fair wages, and the protection of fundamental labor rights. This year, the Maldives has officially commemorated the occasion through nationwide activities and marches to reinforce the value of the labor force.
