Arts Minister Urges Creative Works to Preserve Memories of National Struggle

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Heena Waleed has emphasized that art and photography are essential tools for commemorating the Maldives' national struggles and preserving the memory of the fight for independence. Speaking at a ceremony to announce the winners of a joint competition with the National Centre for the Arts, Minister Heena stated that such initiatives are designed to revive the meaning of freedom. She highlighted the importance of using creative mediums to recall the ancestral sacrifices and rich cultural heritage that define the Maldivian identity. The competition saw significant public engagement, receiving more than 160 submissions. This high level of interest, the Minister noted, proves a widespread desire across all sectors of society to engage with national history through art. Due to this enthusiasm, the government plans to expand the event next year with enhanced prizes to encourage even greater participation. The art category was divided into three age brackets: 10 to 15, 16 to 20, and 21 and above. A total of 74 drawings were submitted, with the youngest group providing the highest number of entries at 31. Meanwhile, the photography contest, open to those aged 16 and older, attracted 90 participants. Winners in both categories were recognized with certificates and cash prizes. First-place victors received USD 648.51, followed by USD 389.11 for second place and USD 194.55 for third. To showcase the talent and historical reflection captured by the participants, the top ten drawings from each age group and ten selected photographs were featured in a public exhibition.
