Arts Minister Urges Preservation of Tourism Heritage for Future Generations

Minister of Arts, Culture, and Heritage Heena Waleed has called for the systematic preservation of historical records and cultural heritage to ensure the Maldives' legacy is passed to future generations.
The Minister made these remarks following her visit to the “Maldivian Resort Architecture” exhibition, a project curated by former Construction Minister Mohamed Mauroof Jameel. The exhibition serves as a comprehensive archive, documenting the evolution of design and architecture within the Maldivian tourism industry from its inception to the present day.
During her visit, Minister Heena described the project as a significant historical resource. She noted that the exhibition provides a detailed look at the layout and architectural designs of resort rooms and buildings from the early years of tourism development. Through a series of professional drawings and illustrations, the collection offers a tangible timeline of how the sector transformed into the cornerstone of the national economy.
Minister Heena expressed concern that many young people today are unfamiliar with the early stages of tourism development and the milestones that shaped the industry. She praised the initiative as a vital national service, emphasizing that such documentation prevents critical historical knowledge from being lost to time.
“I would like to thank Mauroof and acknowledge this as a very important national service,” the Minister said, adding that the comprehensive nature of the exhibition is highly valuable to the state.
Beyond the physical displays, the exhibition is accompanied by a published book containing photographs and detailed information on the architectural shifts. Minister Heena regarded the publication as an immense contribution to the history of the tourism sector.
Concluding her visit, the Minister stressed that while national development and technological advancement are priorities, the government must organize efforts to systematically safeguard memories and achievements. She argued that historical records are essential for maintaining a sense of identity amidst rapid modernization.
The “Maldivian Resort Architecture” exhibition features over 80 professional drawings open to the public, illustrating the technical and aesthetic journey of resort construction in the Maldives.
