Asia Media Summit Opens in Maldives with Focus on AI and Innovation

Environment ·
The Maldives is currently hosting the annual Asia Media Summit (AMS), with pre-summit sessions officially underway to explore the intersection of tradition and technology. Organized by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) in collaboration with Public Service Media (PSM), the event brings together over 300 broadcasting and media management professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region. Under the theme “Maldives 2.0: From Tradition to Tech,” the summit serves as a critical forum for media leaders to navigate the evolving digital landscape. The initial phase of the event features five simultaneous pre-summit workshops distributed across Villa Nautica, Hulhule Island Hotel, and Manhattan Business Hotel. These sessions are designed to equip journalists and broadcasters with practical tools for the modern era. Key topics currently being addressed include the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in news production and visual storytelling, as well as strategies for maintaining public trust in digital media. Other sessions are focusing on social media engagement and the development of climate and disaster-resilient media, a topic of particular urgency for the low-lying archipelagic nation. While the pre-summit activities provide technical training, the official opening ceremony is scheduled for May 12. This will signal the start of the plenary sessions, where high-level discussions on the future of regional broadcasting will take center stage through May 13. The event reflects a significant international draw for the Maldives, with approximately 80 percent of the attendees arriving from overseas. The summit will conclude on May 14 with a symbolic coral-planting activity at Kudagiri, blending the event's technological focus with a commitment to environmental sustainability. By bringing together diverse perspectives from across the Asia-Pacific, the summit aims to bridge the gap between traditional broadcasting values and the disruptive potential of emerging technologies, ensuring that media organizations remain relevant and resilient in an AI-driven world.
