Attorney General Urges Urgent Reform to Secure Maldives Social Security Systems

Attorney General Ahmed Usham has called for an urgent strengthening of social security systems to maintain public confidence amidst rapid global shifts. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Social Security Association (ISA) Technical Seminar, Usham warned that existing frameworks must evolve to survive a landscape of constant change. The Attorney General identified several critical pressures testing the resilience of global social security structures. He pointed to demographic shifts, volatile labor market transformations, widening economic inequality, and the accelerating pace of technological advancement as primary drivers of instability. According to Usham, these interconnected forces require a coordinated and forward-thinking response from both policymakers and institutional leaders. Usham emphasized that sustainability extends beyond simple financial solvency. While adequate funding is essential, he argued that the true foundation of a viable system lies in robust institutions, comprehensive legal frameworks, and trustworthy governance. He asserted that social security must be built upon progressive policies capable of adapting to future societal needs rather than relying on outdated models. "Social security systems should be based on strong legal frameworks and forward-looking policies," Usham stated, highlighting the necessity for adaptability in governance. The Attorney General further linked institutional capacity directly to the protection of citizens' fundamental rights. He warned that neglecting the operational integrity and legal standing of these institutions would leave the most vulnerable populations at risk. Concluding his remarks, Usham stressed that fairness, transparency, and accountability are the cornerstones of effective public service. He maintained that only through these values can state institutions fulfill their responsibilities with the integrity required to safeguard the future of Maldivian citizens.
