Attorney General’s Office Holds Stakeholder Talks to Reform Civil Justice System

The Attorney General’s Office has convened a high-level workshop at Hotel Jen to strategize the strengthening of the Maldives' civil justice system. The gathering brought together key legal stakeholders for two focused sessions aimed at reviewing the Civil Procedure Code and identifying systemic reforms to improve judicial efficiency. The first session centered on a comprehensive review of the existing Civil Procedure Code. Legal experts and officials examined the operational friction points and implementation hurdles that have emerged since the statute took effect. The discussions focused on drafting specific statutory amendments to remove these bottlenecks and streamline legal processes. In the second session, the dialogue shifted toward broader systemic reforms. Participants discussed administrative management within the courts and the critical need to expedite case dispositions. A primary focus was the integration of technology and digital tools to reduce delays and modernize the way civil cases are handled in the Maldivian legal system. The workshop concluded with a set of key policy recommendations and a commitment to further research. These initiatives are part of a wider state effort to fortify court administration across the archipelago. While current interventions are targeting backlog reductions and accelerating services in the higher courts, officials emphasized that strengthening administrative operations in local island magistrate courts is equally vital.
