Auditor General Launches 2026-2029 Plan to Strengthen Public Debt Oversight
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the Auditor General's Office's Strategic Plan for 2026–2029, setting a new course for public sector accountability in the Maldives. The launch took place during the closing ceremony of the Symposium of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The comprehensive four-year roadmap outlines the office's strategic direction, focusing on modernization and a results-oriented approach to governance. A primary pillar of the new strategy is the strengthening of debt management systems, reflecting a critical need for transparency in the nation's financial obligations.
Auditor General Hussain Niyazy stated that the plan is designed to ensure the office can respond effectively to a rapidly shifting operating environment. Beyond financial tracking, the office will now place a heavier emphasis on assessing the actual effectiveness of public policies, moving from simple compliance checks to impact-based evaluations.
To achieve these goals, the Auditor General's Office intends to significantly expand its technical capabilities. The plan prioritizes the growth of specialized services, including forensic audits and information systems audits. By integrating advanced technology and modern auditing methodologies, the office aims to enhance its institutional capacity and precision.
Collaboration remains a key component of the strategy. The office intends to deepen its partnerships with both national stakeholders and international audit bodies to align Maldivian public sector auditing with global best practices. This international cooperation is expected to provide the technical support necessary to implement the plan's more ambitious forensic and digital goals.
