Australia Hands Over Guardian-class Patrol Vessel to Boost Maldives Maritime Security

The Australian Government has officially handed over a Guardian-class patrol vessel to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), marking a significant upgrade to the nation's maritime surveillance and enforcement capabilities. The formal handover ceremony took place at the HMAS Stirling Naval Base in Perth, Australia. The event was attended by senior officials from both nations, symbolizing the deepening strategic partnership between Male' and Canberra. The provision of the vessel follows an announcement made by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles during his official visit to the Maldives in June 2025. The initiative is part of a broader effort to support regional security and stability in the Indian Ocean. According to the MNDF, the new patrol vessel will substantially enhance the Maldives' ability to monitor its vast territorial waters. The asset is expected to strengthen the force's capacity to respond to maritime threats, combat illegal fishing, and manage evolving security challenges in the region. During the ceremony, Australian officials emphasized the critical importance of bilateral ties and the necessity of regional security cooperation to maintain a free and open maritime domain. While the vessel has been officially handed over, it will remain in Australia temporarily to complete rigorous sea trials. During this period, the designated MNDF crew will undergo specialized training in Australia to ensure they are fully proficient in operating the advanced system. The vessel is scheduled for final delivery to the Maldives next month.
