Australian Tourist Arrivals Surge 16% Following New Direct Flight to Melbourne

Australian tourist arrivals to the Maldives have surged by 16%, propelling the country into the ninth-largest source market for the island nation. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, 20,878 Australians visited the Maldives as of June 6, a significant increase from the 17,957 arrivals recorded by the end of last year. This growth marks a steady climb for the Australian market, which moved up from tenth place just one month ago. Australia now sits just ahead of Switzerland in the top ten, trailing the United States in eighth. The broader tourism landscape remains dominated by China, Russia, and the United Kingdom, who hold the top three positions, followed by Italy, Germany, India, and France. The uptick in visitors coincides with the recent launch of direct flight operations by the national carrier, Maldivian. The new service connects Malé directly with Melbourne on a once-weekly schedule. Under the current itinerary, outbound flights depart the Maldives every Sunday, with return flights leaving Australia on Tuesdays, completing the 11-hour journey. Industry representatives for Maldivian report that demand for the new route remains robust. The national carrier estimates that the direct connection could bring approximately 11,000 additional Australian tourists to the Maldives within a single year, further diversifying the nation's tourism portfolio and strengthening ties with the Oceania region.
