Baa Eydhafushi has officially inaugurated a 1.2 megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system, marking a significant shift toward sustainable energy for the Baa Atoll capital. The project, part of the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) initiative, aims to drastically reduce the island's dependence on imported diesel. Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef inaugurated the facility, emphasizing that the transition to renewable energy provides both economic and social advantages. By lowering the high costs associated with fuel procurement, the government intends to redirect saved funds toward other essential community development projects. The system, implemented by the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), represents an investment of approximately USD 3.63 million. It features a ground-mounted solar array coupled with 1.5 megawatt-hours of battery storage. A sophisticated energy management system has been integrated to balance solar power, battery reserves, and diesel generators, ensuring a stable electricity grid for the island's 3,539 residents. The impact on local resources is substantial. Previously, Eydhafushi’s powerhouse consumed two million litres of diesel annually. The new solar installation is expected to offset this by approximately 655,000 litres per year, resulting in an annual expenditure saving of roughly USD 518,807. This transition allows the island to generate 33 per cent of its total electricity from clean energy, which is enough to power approximately 441 households. This project was developed with assistance from the World Bank and is part of a broader national strategy to decarbonize the energy sector. Similar solar systems are planned for installation across 14 other islands, as the Maldives continues to expand its environmentally friendly infrastructure to combat climate change and ensure long-term energy security.
