BAM Approves $674,000 Budget to Revive National Badminton Program

Politics ·
The Badminton Association of Maldives (BAM) has approved an annual budget of USD 674,448, marking a significant step in reviving the sport after a two-year hiatus. The budget was formally endorsed at the association's Annual General Meeting on March 25, the first such gathering since BAM regained its legal status. Newly elected BAM President Ishfan Mohamed presented an ambitious activity calendar to member clubs, with plans contingent on securing expected funding from the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation and sponsors. The centerpiece is the 'Maldives Badminton' age group tournament, which the association aims to expand across various atolls this year. Addressing long-standing resource challenges, BAM has prioritized infrastructure development. A key project involves constructing additional courts to complement the existing national badminton hall, aiming to significantly upgrade training facilities for athletes. The meeting also emphasized transparency, with the executive committee presenting and gaining approval for the 2025 Annual Report, Expenditure Report, and the year's audit report. Members were also briefed on recent changes to the national Sports Act and Rules of Procedure. The new funding will directly support the Maldives' return to international competition. The World Badminton Federation has granted the nation slots in six international tournaments for 2025. The national team's first assignment is the South Asian Regional Junior Championship in Pakistan this April, with preparations already underway. Maldivian athletes are also scheduled to compete in the prestigious 20th Asian Games.
