Bangladesh Foreign Minister Concludes Visit to Maldives to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has concluded his first official visit to the Maldives, marking a strategic effort to revitalize diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two South Asian nations. Dr. Rahman’s visit coincided with the Maldives' 61st Independence Day celebrations, where he attended as a special guest. During the visit, Dr. Rahman held high-level meetings with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. The discussions centered on a comprehensive expansion of bilateral cooperation, focusing on critical sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, and tourism. The ministers also explored opportunities to enhance trade, investment, labour mobility, and human resource development. Beyond economic ties, the two foreign ministers exchanged perspectives on pressing regional and international issues. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a collaborative relationship within multilateral forums, ensuring a unified approach to shared geopolitical challenges. Dr. Rahman's participation in Independence Day events included a diplomatic reception and the national parade at Republic Square. In a notable gesture toward environmental sustainability, Dr. Rahman joined Foreign Minister Adam and Environment Minister Ali Shareef to plant trees at Lonuziyaaraiy Park. This activity was part of the Maldives' ambitious Five Million Trees Programme, symbolizing a joint commitment to climate action. This visit marks the first official trip to the Maldives for Dr. Rahman since he assumed office on February 17, 2026. The mission was designed to provide fresh momentum to the partnership, emphasizing the interdependence of the two neighbors in a rapidly evolving regional landscape. Dr. Rahman departed the Maldives on Monday via Velana International Airport, where he was seen off by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Fahmy Hassan and other senior government officials.
