A Bangladeshi national who lost his passport while being escorted to the airport for deportation from the Maldives has been sentenced to 15 days in detention. The Criminal Court issued the order after the man was arrested on suspicion of causing damage to property.
The individual, identified as 21-year-old Sheikh Md Masum Latif, was living in the Maldives in violation of immigration laws. While being taken to the airport under Immigration supervision for removal, he lost his passport, leading to the charge of property damage.
During the court proceedings, the judge noted that the accused displayed signs of mental health issues after his arrest and was subsequently assessed. However, according to the police report cited in the court order, the assessment found no legal barriers to proceeding with a criminal investigation. The court has therefore allowed the investigation into the charges to continue.
