Bank of Maldives CEO Mohamed Shareef Becomes First Maldivian to Chair Asian Bankers Association
World ·
Bank of Maldives (BML) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef has been appointed Chairman of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA), marking the first time a Maldivian has held the prestigious leadership position. Shareef officially assumed the role on July 31, 2026, following a decision by the ABA Board.
This appointment serves as a culmination of Shareef's long-standing involvement with the association. He previously served as Vice Chairman from 2018 to 2020, where he focused on advancing strategic objectives and fostering collaboration among member banks across Asia. His contributions led to his reappointment to the ABA leadership team in 2025.
Expressing his gratitude, Shareef stated he was deeply honored by the confidence shown by the ABA Board and its member institutions. He emphasized his commitment to working with the Secretariat and member banks to strengthen regional cooperation and support the ongoing development of Asia's banking industry.
Dr. Darsan Chiu, the ABA Secretary-Treasurer, welcomed the appointment and acknowledged Shareef's dedication to the association's goals. Dr. Chiu assured him of the Secretariat's full support in promoting growth and stability within the regional banking sector.
Founded in 1981, the Asian Bankers Association is the premier regional body representing banks and banking associations across Asia. The organization acts as a hub for policy dialogue and capacity building, bringing together regulators, policymakers, and financial leaders to share best practices and address emerging industry challenges.
BML described the appointment as a significant milestone for both the bank and the nation, noting that it strengthens the Maldives' representation in regional financial leadership. The appointment highlights the international recognition of Shareef's expertise and the growing influence of the Maldivian banking sector on the global stage.
This leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment, as the Maldives is set to host this year's ABA Conference from September 1 to 3, organized by the Bank of Maldives.
