Bank of Maldives Credit Rating Reflects Strong Financial Profile Amid Economic Reforms

Politics ·
The Bank of Maldives (BML) has welcomed a new credit rating from Fitch Ratings, describing it as a testament to the enduring strength of the nation’s largest financial institution and the broader economic trajectory of the Maldives. Fitch assigned a 'CCC-' Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to the bank with a stable outlook. Notably, BML received a 'CCC+' Local Currency Long-Term IDR, positioning the bank two notches above the Maldivian sovereign rating. This assessment follows a recent upgrade of the Maldives’ own Long-Term Foreign-Currency IDR from 'CC' to 'CCC-' on June 3, a move driven by critical revenue reforms, the introduction of a new foreign exchange law, and the successful repayment of a USD 500 million Sukuk. According to the bank, the rating highlights BML's systemic importance to the economy, its dominant market share, and its success in digital banking and revenue generation. Fitch noted that the bank's capital remains strong, supported by prudent dividend policies and robust risk management. However, BML clarified that while its intrinsic financial profile is strong, its overall rating remains capped by the sovereign rating of the Maldives, which acts as a ceiling for all domestic financial institutions. Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of BML, stated that the evaluation recognizes the bank's ability to generate capital organically while maintaining resilient performance within a small island economy. He emphasized that as the most systemically important financial institution in the country, BML remains committed to supporting its customers and driving national economic development. The assessment further underscores BML's central role in facilitating national transactions, supporting local businesses, and managing the circulation of foreign currency. Despite the acknowledged challenges facing the financial sector, the evaluation confirms that the Bank of Maldives remains a primary pillar of the national economy, maintaining stable earnings through its market leadership.
