Bank of Maldives Named Among Forbes' World's Top Performing Banks for 2026

World ·
Bank of Maldives (BML) has been included in the 2026 edition of the "World's Top Performing Banks" list compiled by Forbes — the world's most famous business magazine — together with global research giant Statista. According to the report, the list features 500 banks selected from 89 countries and is the first edition of such a ranking. BML said the achievement is not only a great source of pride for the Maldives' banking sector, but also a historic success that demonstrates BML is a bank operating at the same level as other major global financial institutions. In the Forbes and Statista ranking, banks were weighted against four key financial and operational metrics: level of profitability, growth and revenue levels, the strength of capital and funding, and asset levels and efficiency. The study drew on information provided by credible sources such as S&P Capital IQ, banks' publicly disclosed reports and independent research. Of the six tiers into which the list is divided, BML is placed in the sixth tier, which includes banks with total assets of between USD 3 billion and USD 10 billion. BML said the recognition is evidence of the bank's financial performance on the global stage, its robust risk management principles and sustainable growth. BML's CEO and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, said this is a ranking issued after comparing BML with banks of its size and assessing their financial statistics. "This is a ranking given by comparing us with banks of our size located in different parts of the world and looking at financial statistics. This is a listing that shows, in line with the reality that is always reflected in the bank's results, that BML is an institution built on strong, adequate capital and sound management," Shareef said. Shareef said customers can obtain banking services with full confidence, and that the returns the bank delivers to shareholders have been proven. BML said that, in its capacity as the national bank, it will continue to fully carry out the responsibility it owes to the Maldives' economy, strengthen the bank's foundations, invest in employees and technology, and work for the progress of businesses and the community. BML said the achievement is a great encouragement for the bank to deliver the best possible financial services to its customers and shareholders.
