The Bank of Maldives (BML) has selected Finastra, a global leader in financial services software, to overhaul its core banking system. This strategic partnership is a central pillar of the bank's long-term digital transformation initiative aimed at upgrading the nation's financial infrastructure.
Under the agreement, BML will implement Finastra Essence, a comprehensive core banking platform. The system is designed to boost operational efficiency and accelerate the launch of new financial products across both conventional and Islamic banking operations. By automating key processes and increasing operational flexibility, BML expects to significantly enhance its customer service delivery.
The new platform will specifically empower relationship managers to offer more tailored financial products while maintaining the stability of the bank's dual banking model. BML stated that Finastra Essence was chosen following a rigorous evaluation of various platforms, with the decision based on its open technology architecture, advanced functionality, and strong market reputation.
Mohamed Shareef, BML Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, described the partnership as a pivotal milestone. He emphasized that the bank's strategy is rooted in continuous innovation to provide lasting value to Maldivian communities. According to Shareef, the agile foundation provided by Finastra will allow the bank to drive operational excellence and deliver world-class financial services to customers across the archipelago.
Siobhan Byron, Finastra's Executive Vice President for Universal Banking, recognized BML as a cornerstone of the Maldivian financial sector. She noted that the open and flexible architecture of the Essence platform would enable the bank to innovate rapidly without compromising resilience.
This modernization effort signals a broader shift toward digitalization within the Maldives' banking sector, as the country's largest bank seeks to replace legacy systems with future-ready technology to meet the evolving needs of its diverse customer base.
