Bank of Maldives Partners with SMU to Build Future Financial Leaders
Politics ·
The Bank of Maldives (BML) has entered into a strategic partnership with Singapore Management University (SMU) to accelerate leadership development and professional education for its workforce. The agreement aims to enhance the technical and managerial capabilities of staff at the Maldives' largest financial institution.
This collaboration expands an existing relationship between the SMU Academy and the BML Academy—a dedicated internal initiative designed to provide specialized training and continuous professional development pathways for bank employees. Under the new agreement, SMU will assist in designing and delivering tailored training programs specifically aligned with the operational needs of the bank.
By implementing structured frameworks for knowledge and skills exchange, BML intends to raise professional competencies across all levels of the organization. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure that the bank's internal education standards meet international benchmarks.
Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives, emphasized that the partnership reflects the bank's commitment to cultivating leadership expertise. He noted that as a cornerstone of the national economy, BML's investment in its people is an investment in the country's economic growth.
“Through the BML Academy, we are developing structured educational programmes aligned with international standards,” Shareef stated. “This initiative will help empower future leaders of our economy.”
The partnership has already yielded tangible results. In the previous year, 40 BML employees completed leadership programs. This included 20 senior staff members who earned an Executive Certificate in Leadership and People Management from SMU, and another 20 who completed an SMU-led course to obtain a certification through the BML Academy.
With the formal agreement now signed, the bank confirmed that additional training programs are already underway to further strengthen the professional pipeline of its employees.
