BCC to Reform Small Business Regulations to Boost Digital Creator Economy

World ·
The Business Centre Corporation (BCC) is reviewing regulatory frameworks for small businesses to introduce critical reforms aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and modernization. Managing Director Ibrahim Ziyau announced the initiative in a statement marking World Entrepreneurs' Day, emphasizing the need for laws to evolve alongside global business trends. Ziyau highlighted that rapid technological advancements have created unprecedented opportunities for freelancers, artists, designers, and developers to transform creative concepts into sustainable ventures. For an island nation like the Maldives, the digital and creator economy is viewed as a strategic gateway, allowing young Maldivians to bypass geographical barriers and access international markets directly. Central to this strategy is the establishment of the "Creator Hub," a dedicated platform designed to provide creators with essential resources and support under one roof. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader digital policy, which seeks to empower the youth and expand the footprint of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the national economy. Addressing the systemic challenges faced by entrepreneurs, Ziyau stated that the BCC is collaborating with stakeholders to identify and remove regulatory bottlenecks. The goal is to ensure that the physical location of a business owner—whether based in the capital or a remote island—does not hinder their ability to compete or scale. Beyond regulatory changes, the BCC plans to intensify its delivery of guidance, specialized training, and market access for SMEs. By prioritizing initiatives that strengthen the operational capacity of small businesses, the corporation aims to integrate these ventures more deeply into the Maldives' economic fabric. Ziyau concluded by urging young people with an entrepreneurial mindset to leverage these expanding digital opportunities. The BCC remains committed to creating a favorable environment where creativity and innovation can drive economic growth, regardless of a business owner's location.
