Dredging work has officially commenced for the development of a new airport on the island of Bilehfahi in Shaviyani Atoll. The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), awarded the contract last October, is undertaking the project.
Bilehfahi Council President Abdulla Ziyad told PSM News the airport is anticipated to drive significant development for the island and the wider region. He highlighted its expected role in boosting economic growth and enhancing transport connectivity for Bilehfahi and neighboring communities.
The initial phase involves dredging approximately 36 hectares of land, with this work projected for completion within eight months. The planned airport infrastructure will feature a 1,500-meter runway and supporting aviation facilities.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who oversaw the contract signing during a visit to Shaviyani Atoll, has stated the airport is expected to be fully completed and operational within 30 months.
This project is a key component of the government's national strategy to expand domestic air connectivity. The broader plan includes developing 15 new airports alongside existing facilities across the Maldives.
