BML and Mindco Launch Colab 26 Hackathon to Drive Digital Transformation

Politics ·
The Bank of Maldives (BML) and the Maldives Innovation and Digital Company (Mindco) have launched the 'Colab 26 Hackathon,' a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating digital innovation and technological growth across the archipelago. The competition seeks to gather the nation's brightest minds to build functional prototypes that solve pressing real-world challenges. Operating under the newly established National AI and Data Competency Centre—a joint venture between Mindco and BML—the hackathon follows the initial Colab 26 conference. The event serves as a practical extension of the discussions and emerging tech trends explored during that summit. The competition is divided into two specialized tracks. The first track focuses on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into government operations and public services. Participating teams will target sectors including healthcare, education, tourism, social security, state finance, and environmental management. The goal is to utilize AI to streamline bureaucracy, increase operational efficiency, and provide policymakers with data-driven decision-support tools. The second track focuses on the evolution of financial technology (FinTech). Utilizing BML's Swipe API platform, developers and innovators will have exclusive access to tools designed to create next-generation financial applications. This track aims to reshape the digital payments landscape within the Maldives, making financial transactions more seamless and accessible. This initiative is a key pillar of the 'Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation' agenda, a national strategy to position the Maldives as a regional hub for technological advancement. By bridging the gap between theoretical ideas and functional software, the hackathon aims to create tangible improvements in how the state and the private sector operate. Organizers are calling for a diverse pool of talent, including data scientists, software developers, university students, entrepreneurs, and domain experts from various professional fields. Interested applicants can now register through the official Colab 26 portal, which provides detailed information on the competition timeline and the mentors who will support the teams during the development process.
