A major affordable housing initiative has begun construction, aiming to ease the cost of living for Maldivian families. The Bank of Maldives (BML) Affordable Housing Project officially broke ground on 1,190 housing units in Hulhumalé Phase II, with the ceremony officiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Zhang Suoquan, Special Envoy of the Chairman of the Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), described the project as a crucial step in providing safe, modern, and affordable homes. He stated that housing forms the foundation of a happy life and that the initiative aligns with the national housing policy under President Muizzu's leadership. Zhang emphasized that the project represents a significant, tangible effort to directly benefit citizens. He thanked the Maldivian government for its confidence and cooperation, expressing BUCG's belief that the development will reduce housing costs in urban areas and improve overall quality of life. The event also served to highlight BUCG's long-standing role in Maldivian infrastructure. Zhang cited the company's work on the Velana International Airport runway, its world-class seaplane terminal, and Madivaru Airport as major engineering achievements. These projects, he noted, have created thousands of jobs within the nation's vital tourism sector and made substantial contributions to the national economy. BUCG takes pride in the tangible benefits its work has brought to the Maldivian people, both in economic growth and daily convenience, Zhang concluded.
