Bodies of Four Missing Italian Divers Located in Vaavu Atoll Cave

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has located the bodies of four Italian divers who went missing during a dive in Vaavu Atoll. The discovery follows an extensive search operation involving maritime vessels and aircraft after reports of the missing tourists were received last Thursday.
According to a statement from the MNDF, the victims were found inside the cave where they had been diving. The recovery effort is a coordinated international operation involving the MNDF Coast Guard, the Maldives Police Service, and a team of specialist divers from Finland arranged by the Italian government.
Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef confirmed that the Finnish team arrived in the Maldives yesterday to lead the high-risk recovery phase. These specialists, known for conducting dangerous underwater missions globally, have already begun orientation dives to familiarize themselves with the site's specific topography before attempting the deep-water recovery.
While the Finnish team handles the deep-dive operations, personnel from the Maldivian Coast Guard and Police Service are providing essential support and logistics. Two local Maldivian companies are also assisting the mission, which utilizes comprehensive specialized diving equipment brought in by the international experts.
The operation began shortly after 13:45 on Thursday when the MNDF Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) received the initial distress report. While all four bodies have now been sighted, the MNDF noted that recovery efforts will continue over the coming days due to the complexities of the cave environment.
This tragic incident underscores the risks associated with cave diving in the archipelago's deep-water systems. The authorities remain committed to recovering the remains and providing necessary support to the families of the deceased.
