Bodies of Remaining Italian Divers Recovered After Extensive Cave Search Operation

Politics ·
Maldivian authorities and international experts have recovered the bodies of the final two Italian tourists missing after a diving accident, bringing a multi-day search operation to a close on May 20. The victims were located within a complex cave system. Recovery efforts were carried out in stages, with two bodies retrieved previously and the final two recovered today. The operation involved a high level of coordination between the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard, the Maldives Police Service, and a specialized team of Finnish technical divers deployed by the Italian government. Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef confirmed that authorities are currently identifying the remains and coordinating with the Italian government to facilitate repatriation. Shareef expressed gratitude to the MNDF, the police, and two local companies that provided voluntary assistance during the mission. The crisis began on May 14, when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received a report at 1:45 pm regarding five missing divers. The group, consisting of an Italian diving instructor and four tourists, had failed to resurface at their scheduled time. Following the initial report, the MNDF launched an immediate sea and air search. The first body to be recovered was identified as the diving instructor. The recovery of the remaining divers required the expertise of three Finnish technical divers. These specialists brought significant international experience to the Maldives, having led similar high-risk underwater recovery operations globally. Their involvement was critical in navigating the cave system to reach the victims. This tragic incident underscores the inherent risks of cave diving and the necessity of international cooperation in complex maritime rescue missions. The Maldivian government continues to work closely with Italian officials to ensure the families of the victims are supported during the repatriation process.
