Boduthakurufaanu Magu Closes for Final Phase of Major Malé Waterfront Upgrade

A key coastal road in Malé will close entirely from midnight Sunday as authorities begin the final phase of a major waterfront modernization project. The Maldives Police Service announced the immediate closure of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between Izzuddin Jetty and the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to allow construction on the remaining four segments of the development. The work, scheduled to start Monday, follows the completion of earlier stretches from the Local Market to the North Harbour. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) stated the project will upgrade a 700-meter section with modern asphalt and construct a 610-meter seawall to widen the road and increase capacity. The comprehensive overhaul also includes a new drainage system, pedestrian pavements, and upgraded street lighting, mirroring the design of previously finished sections. To facilitate construction, police have instructed the public to remove all private vehicles from the area. Officials confirmed that atoll ferries which previously used the Henveiru Ferry Terminal will be rerouted to the Maafannu and Hulhumalé terminals. Despite the extensive roadworks, the area containing the Fishermen's Park will remain entirely unchanged.
