Bolsonaro Discharged from Hospital and Returns to Jail Amidst 27-Year Sentence
International ·
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been discharged from a hospital in Brasilia, a week after undergoing double hernia surgery. He has been transferred back to federal police custody to continue serving his 27-year prison sentence. Bolsonaro was transported from DF Star hospital to the federal police headquarters, where he remains detained following his conviction for leading a coup attempt aimed at maintaining his presidency. The hospital confirmed his discharge, stating the surgery was completed without complications. Brazil’s Supreme Court had authorized his temporary release for the operation but rejected a request for house arrest post-discharge. Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, has undergone multiple medical procedures since being stabbed during a 2018 campaign rally. He is held in a 12-square-meter room at the federal police headquarters, equipped with basic amenities but no contact with other detainees. Bolsonaro’s conviction stems from his involvement in a plot to overthrow Brazil’s democratic system after his 2022 election defeat, which included plans to kill President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other officials.
