Cabinet Sets New Economic Benchmarks for Maldives' Key Sectors, Minister Saeed Announces

The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has revealed that the Cabinet has established new economic benchmarks to drive prosperity across key sectors in the Maldives. Speaking at the 63rd Anniversary Celebration of the national radio Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu, Minister Saeed declared 2026 as the 'Year of Maldives' Productivity,' emphasizing a renewed focus on accelerating progress toward the nation's long-term development goals. Minister Saeed highlighted the necessity of achieving consistent economic growth of 5-6 percent per capita annually to reach developed-nation status by 2040. The government plans to implement sector-specific performance standards and encourage reforms in national institutions, including media, to engage youth and workers in development efforts. He urged citizens to embrace a collective vision for a fully developed Maldives, emphasizing the pivotal role of accurate information and media in shaping perceptions and driving progress. Public Service Media (PSM) Managing Director Ahmed Shakeeb echoed these sentiments, praising President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to modernizing the media sector. The anniversary event also celebrated winners of the Children’s News Reading Competition and the Poetry Competition, alongside the selection of the audience’s favorite radio presenter.
