Chemistry Teacher Charged with Five Offenses in Alleged Child Sexual Abuse Case

A 46-year-old chemistry teacher in Male' has been charged with five offenses related to the alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old student. The teacher was arrested after reportedly abusing the student while tutoring her. The Prosecutor General’s Office has filed charges including child sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust, knowingly entering an unauthorized place, obstructing law enforcement, entering the residence with intent to commit a sexual offense, and possession of pornography. If convicted, the teacher faces a lengthy prison sentence under Maldivian law. Police have not disclosed the suspect's full identity due to the involvement of a minor. The charges were submitted to court last week.
