China-funded Road Modernisation Project Begins Surveys in Malé and Villimale'

Technical teams have officially commenced surveying and research work for a comprehensive project to modernise the road networks of Malé and Villimale'. The initiative marks a critical step in the government's broader infrastructure development agenda to upgrade the capital region's urban landscape. Originally planned as a state-funded project, the initiative will now be implemented through grant aid provided by the Government of China. This shift in funding occurred following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to China, where the administration's priority on urban infrastructure improvement aligned with available grant assistance. The commitment was formalised in October last year through a letter of exchange between the two nations, triggering the current design phase. Under the current agreement, Chinese agencies are responsible for managing the project arrangements and overseeing the procurement process for the contractors who will execute the construction works. Fieldwork is currently underway to create detailed engineering drawings and project specifications. These surveys include comprehensive assessments of existing infrastructure and stakeholder consultations, with this initial research phase scheduled to continue until June 4. The project extends beyond simple road resurfacing, adopting a holistic approach to urban planning. The modernisation effort will integrate substantial upgrades to critical utility networks, including water supply, sewerage systems, and electrical infrastructure. Additionally, the project will overhaul stormwater drainage networks and install fire hydrants throughout the targeted areas to improve city resilience and safety. This large-scale upgrade is central to the Muizzu administration's vision for the nation, aiming to reduce congestion and improve the quality of life for residents in the densely populated capital and its neighbouring island.
