China Pledges Debt-Free Aid for Major Maldivian Hospital and Road Projects

China is set to expand its developmental footprint in the Maldives through several high-impact infrastructure projects, all funded through aid to avoid increasing the nation's debt burden. Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua announced that construction for the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital and the Malé and Vilimalé Road Redevelopment Project is expected to begin by late 2024 or early 2025. Speaking at a reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival, Ambassador Kong emphasized a strong alignment between China’s 2035 modernization goals and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to transform the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040. He noted that the project to construct Island Council buildings is also progressing, with approval expected by the end of the year. The Ambassador highlighted a strategic synergy between China’s technological and capital strengths and the Maldives' natural resources. He specifically pointed to opportunities in the “blue economy,” green development, and digitalization, aligning with President Muizzu’s priorities to modernize fisheries, expand tourism, and diversify the economy. Tourism remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship. As of September 15, 280,000 Chinese tourists visited the Maldives, marking a 13 percent increase. This surge in arrivals is expected to peak during the upcoming Chinese National Day holiday. Addressing recent infrastructure concerns, Ambassador Kong confirmed that a Chinese maintenance team inspected the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge after it was struck by a drifting vessel. He assured that the structure remains sound and that China will continue providing maintenance services in coordination with local engineers. Beyond infrastructure, the Ambassador lauded the growing people-to-people ties, noting that nearly 300 Maldivians visited China this year on government invitations. To further these economic links, the China-Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum will be held in October, offering a platform for businesses from both nations to explore new commercial partnerships.
