China Pledges Support for Maldives’ Priority Development and Food Security Sectors

China has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Maldives' priority development sectors, focusing on expanding economic cooperation and strengthening commercial ties between the two nations. The announcement follows an official visit to China by the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed. During high-level discussions with Liu Xiaoming, Governor of China's Hainan Province, Minister Saeed focused on maximizing the strategic advantages of the existing Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The talks aimed to broaden joint projects designed to drive sustainable development and create long-term economic stability for the archipelago. Minister Saeed noted that these efforts build upon the strategic framework established during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The ongoing collaboration underscores the deep diplomatic and economic ties between the two governments. Furthering the economic agenda, Minister Saeed visited the Haiken Group Product Exhibition Hall and held meetings with Meng Xiaoliang, Deputy General Manager of the Hainan State Farms Investment Holding Group. These discussions centered on critical initiatives to safeguard food security and enhance regional transport and logistics connectivity. A key priority for the Maldivian government is increasing the direct export of fish products to Hainan, seeking to open new markets for the local fishing industry. By streamlining trade routes and leveraging Chinese logistics expertise, the Maldives aims to boost its foreign exchange earnings and support local fishers. China remains a vital development partner for the Maldives, extending its role beyond the financing and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects. Beijing's support now encompasses broader initiatives to enhance human resources and institutional capacity, ensuring the Maldives can maintain economic resilience in the face of global challenges.
