China to Build 500 Social Housing Units in Malé via Interest-Free Aid
Politics ·
The Maldives and China have formally agreed to develop 500 social housing units in Malé City, providing a critical boost to the government's efforts to alleviate the acute housing shortage in the capital.
The agreement was finalized through the signing of the "Minutes of the Meeting" during the High Level Conference on Global Action for Shared Development, held in Beijing from April 21 to 22. This diplomatic milestone is the result of extensive bilateral discussions focused on shared development and urban growth.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, the project will be funded through interest-free financial assistance provided by the Chinese government. This funding model ensures that the expansion of social housing does not add to the national debt burden while addressing the immediate needs of urban residents.
Representing the Maldivian government, Minister of State for Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Ibrahim Thoaam Mohamed signed the agreement. He was joined by Liu Junfeng, Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), who signed on behalf of the Chinese side.
Beyond the housing project, officials from both nations utilized the summit to review other ongoing development initiatives in the Maldives funded by Chinese assistance. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation to ensure these collaborative projects are implemented safely and on schedule.
This initiative marks a significant step in the bilateral relationship between the two nations, focusing on tangible infrastructure outcomes that directly impact the living standards of Maldivian citizens in the densely populated capital.
