Chinese Ambassador Highlights Role of Heritage in Strengthening Maldivian National Identity

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua has emphasized that preserving a nation's heritage and culture is essential for reviving and strengthening its national identity. The Ambassador shared these reflections in a social media post following his visit to Utheemu to participate in official National Day celebrations. Drawing a parallel to the teachings of Jamaican political activist Marcus Garvey, Ambassador Kong noted that people devoid of knowledge regarding their history and culture are like "a tree without roots." He stressed that transferring historical knowledge to future generations is a critical step in fostering deeper patriotism and a sense of belonging. During his visit, the Ambassador explored "Vaahaka Vau," an immersive historical exhibit located near the Utheemu Kandhuvalu Mosque. Set within a natural woodland, the site uses 14 chronological information boards to narrate the historic jihad of national hero Bodu Thakurufaanu, who led the struggle to liberate the Maldives from Portuguese colonial rule. Ambassador Kong also visited the Bodu Thakurufaanu Memorial Arch, a structure designed to symbolize the resilience of the Maldivian people. The memorial features six main pillars that mirror the unique architectural style of the country's ancient mosques, serving as a permanent tribute to Al-Sultan Al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam. Beyond its cultural significance, the Ministry of Heritage highlighted the socio-economic impact of preserving such sites. By drawing more visitors to Utheemu, the ministry expects a sustainable increase in demand for local guesthouses and cafés. This growth in cultural tourism is projected to create new income streams for the local community, providing expanded opportunities for historical storytellers, licensed guides, transport providers, and cultural workers. Through the integration of history and tourism, the government aims to preserve the legacy of Bodu Thakurufaanu while empowering the residents of Utheemu.
